At How We Heal CIC, our work focuses on trauma recovery & wellbeing in the East Midlands. We believe that healing is not just an individual journey but also a collective one. Trauma often ripples beyond the person that experienced it, affecting families, workplaces, and entire communities. That's why community support is at the heart of what we do.
What is Community Trauma Recovery?
When we speak about trauma recovery, people often think only of therapy, counselling or personal healing. While those are important, trauma doesn't exist in isolation. The effects of violence, loss, abuse, or systemic hardship often spread into the spaces where people live, learn and work.
Community trauma recovery recognises that healing must also happen collectively. It means creating environments where people feel safe, supported, and connected. It also means breaking down the stigma surrounding trauma so that individuals are not left carrying the burden alone.
Why Community Support Matters
Community support plays a crucial role in three key ways:
Breaking isolation - Trauma can be deeply isolating. Small group programmes and workshops, peer support circles, and community events remind people that they are not alone.
Building resilience - When communities come together, they develop shared strategies, which help them withstand and recover from future challenges.
Creating belonging - Healing isn't just about overcoming pain; it's also about reconnecting with hope, purpose and a sense of belonging.
Research consistently shows that people recover more effectively when they are embedded in strong, supportive communities. It's why we design all our initiatives with connection and collaboration in mind.
How We Heal CIC Community Trauma Recovery Approach
At How We Heal CIC, community trauma recovery is centre of our approach. We aim to weave community support into everything we do. Our focus includes:
Wellbeing workshops - Practical sessions that give people the tools to manage stress, anxiety, and the after effects of trauma.
Peer support spaces - Safe environments where lived experience is valued and shared.
Trauma-informed practice - Ensuring that every activity respects the needs of people who have experienced trauma, fostering safety and empowerment.
Community partnerships - Working with local charities, organisations and services to make sure recovery resources reach the people who need them most.
Our goal is to make trauma recovery not just an individual path but a community mission.
Looking Ahead
As a newly incorporated, active Community Interest Company, we are excited about the journey ahead. We're beginning to build relationships, seek funding, and launch evidence based programmes in the East Midlands that bring hope and healing where they are needed most.
Healing takes courage - but also takes community. Together we can create environments where recovery is not just possible but sustainable.
